Setup, migration and update

Learn how the latest changes ensure a smooth and reliable setup, migration, and update process with minimal disruption to your work.

  • Octoplant client updates are now delivered via MSI installers, making upgrades more robust, faster and easier to manage.
  • An MSI installer is now also available for the BackupClient, enabling standardized, automated deployment and updates for BackupClient installations.
  • SmartUpdate automatically selects the correct installer (client or BackupClient) and installs required .NET components where needed.
  • All client installations, including those on the server, now use a unified MSI-based approach, with EXE wrappers for straightforward interactive installations and MSI files for silent or push deployments.

  • With Octoplant 107, several client configurations were added to the Octoplant setup. This has increased the size of the binary files. As a result, the Octoplant download file has grown from ~1.6 GB to ~3.8 GB. This can cause problems with some browsers.

For this reason, the download is now split into two parts:

    • Octoplant server (~2.2 GB), which corresponds to the file you downloaded in previous releases
    • Octoplant clients (~1.6 GB), which includes setup files for the various clients
  • The update package that you download from the Octoplant server is now smaller and easier to distribute and maintain because it contains only a few files instead of thousands.

  • With Octoplant 107.0, we upgraded the client framework from Qt 5 to Qt 6 because Qt 5 has reached end of life and no longer receives security updates.

As a result of this change, we no longer support Windows Server 2016 with Octoplant 107.0. If you are currently running Octoplant on Windows Server 2016, please plan your migration accordingly before upgrading to version 107.0.

Since Windows Server 2016 will reach full end of life on January 12, 2027 (and regular support already ended on January 11, 2022), we strongly recommend migrating to a newer, supported Windows operating system to maintain security and compatibility.
