Server

The server is usually installed on a virtual computer (via the VMWare software) and offers the great advantage that adjustments can be made to the equipment of the virtual computer at any time.

For example, the following components of a virtual computer can be easily expanded:

  • Memory
  • CPU
  • Hard disk capacity
  • Network connection

As the virtualization of computers has become the standard in IT today, most virtual machines are also installed. Of course, octoplant can also be installed on a physical server.

With this variant, the project data is stored on the same computer on which the VDog MasterService runs. For data recovery in an emergency, back up the local server archive. It contains all the necessary information.

An additional option is to separate the VDog MasterService and the projects managed by octoplant.

In this variant, the project data is not stored on the same computer on which the VDog MasterService is running, but on a remote share. The computer on which the VDog MasterService is running also has a local server archive for technical reasons. However, this does not contain any project data.

The performance of a network in terms of data transfer for a remote archive cannot be compared with a local hard disk.

Regardless of which setup you choose, questions about existing connections/interfaces must be clarified in advance. In addition, a comparison of current and future network load is necessary. For larger dimensions in terms of company and production size, a network model can be helpful. This provides an initial note on what exactly is needed and which features would bring additional benefits.
