Server

The server is usually installed on a virtual machine using VMWare software, which offers the significant advantage of allowing you to adjust the virtual machine’s resources or configuration at any time.

For example, the following components of a virtual computer can be easily expanded:

• Memory
• CPU
• Hard disk capacity
• Network connection

As the virtualization of computers has become the standard in IT today, most virtual machines are also installed. Of course, octoplant can also be installed on a physical server.

With this option, the project data, databases, and metadata are stored on the same computer where the VDog MasterService runs. To ensure you can recover data in an emergency, back up the local server archive, as it contains all necessary information.

Another option is to separate the VDog MasterService from the projects managed by octoplant.

With this option, the project data is stored on a remote share rather than on the same computer where the VDog MasterService runs. The computer running the VDog MasterService still maintains a local server archive for technical reasons, but this archive does not contain any project data.

The performance of a network in terms of data transfer for a remote archive cannot be compared with a local hard disk.

No matter which setup you choose, make sure to clarify any questions about existing connections and interfaces in advance. You should also compare the current network load with the expected future load.
For larger companies or production environments, creating a network model can be helpful. It provides an initial overview of requirements and identifies features that could deliver additional benefits.
