Install a server
You can install a new server with or without clients.
If you install New server with client (both on this computer), the client installation follows up the server installation automatically.
Prerequisites
- You can access the Octoplant setup file.
- You have a valid license file issued within the last 60 days.
- You have administrative rights for the account that runs the installation.
- File execution is allowed on the drives used for the server archive and the client archive. Disable any security policies that block file execution.
- If file execution is blocked, the system shows an SQLException message when you sign in, and you can’t sign in.
-
Firewall requirements:
The following ports must be opened in the firewall:
- 64001: Contact point for the AdminClient or configuration management
- 64002: Checking in and out of versions
- 64003: Scheduler for backup jobs
- 64004: Platform-independent mapping of the functions of an operating system
- 64023: Required for the operation of Octoplant
Procedure
- Execute the
Setup.exefile on the computer intended for the server installation as administrator. - In the installation wizard that opens, select a language, then select Next.
- On the welcome page of the installation wizard, select Next.
- Select the Install Octoplant applications option.
- Select Next.
- On the license agreement page, select I agree to continue with the installation.
-
Select one of the options New server or New server with client (both on this computer).
The client installation will be executed automatically after the server installation is finished.
-
Select Next.
-
Enter the path to the Octoplant license file.
You can enter the path directly or select it using the Browse... button.
-
Select Next.
-
Enter the paths to the directories for the client and server applications.
If you install a server without clients, the path for the client applications is grayed out. You can enter paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.
We recommend keeping the paths suggested in the installation wizard.
Examples:
C:\Program Files\vdogClientC:\Program Files\vdogServer
-
Select Next.
-
Select the storage location for the server archive.
- Local: The server archive is stored in a local directory.
- Remote: The server archive is stored in a remote directory.
-
Select Next.
-
Enter the paths to the server archive, the directory for the client setup files and, for the client installation, the client archive.
You can enter paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.
We recommend keeping the paths suggested in the installation wizard.
Examples:
D:\vdServerArchiveD:\vdServerArchive\vdog client setupD:\vdClientArchive
If you have selected the Remote option as the storage location for the server archive, the Path to the project files on an external drive field is displayed. Enter the path to the remote directory in this field (format:
\\systemname\share\path).For technical reasons, a path for the local server archive must also be entered if the Remote option is selected. The user or user account from which the installation is carried out requires read and write permissions to the remote system.
The server archive contains a range of data: versions, backups, metadata etc. Allow sufficient storage space for the server archive.
-
Select Next.
-
If you want to make the Octoplant client installers available on the network, activate the Create the above network share option. It is deactivated by default.
The name of the network share is vdog client setup. By default, every user has read access to the directory and administrators have full access.
-
Select Next.
-
Specify the user account from which the Octoplant services are to be started. You have the choice between the Local system account and Username options.
The account must have full access rights to the server archive directory. We recommend selecting the Username option and specifying an account with administrative rights. The system account may not have the necessary rights.
The domain must always be specified for a domain account. Format:{Domain}\{Username}(example: DATAMAN\TomT). -
Select Next.
-
On the next page, enter the password for the versiondog superuser.
Critical error when using the password change-it
If the password change-it is set for the user versiondog when the server starts, a critical error is logged in the Octoplant Event log. You must change the password at the next login.
-
Specify, if you want to install Octoplant example data.
The examples are only for illustration purposes, the Octoplant system is also fully functional without them.

Select Next.
- Check the displayed data summary.
-
If everything is correct, select Next.
The server installation is performed. Upon the completion of the installation process a message is displayed reminding you of the required firewall configuration.
-
After successful installation, select Finish to close the wizard.
- If you choose to install the clients, the client installation runs automatically.
After client installation, the client icons appear in the desktop and you can set up the server and start using Octoplant.
