Install a new server with existing server archive

When installing Octoplant, you can use existing server and client archives, for example, to work with existing data at a different location or to continue using it with a newer Octoplant version, such as when updating. For information on updating the Octoplant version, see Update Octoplant -> Update the server.

It is not possible to install an older version of Octoplant with a server archive that was created with a newer version.

Prerequisites

  • You can access the Octoplant setup file.
  • You have a valid license file issued within the last 60 days.
  • You have administrative rights for the account that runs the installation.
  • File execution is allowed on the drives used for the server archive and the client archive. Disable any security policies that block file execution.
  • If file execution is blocked, the system shows an SQLException message when you sign in, and you can’t sign in.
  • Firewall requirements:

The following ports must be opened in the firewall:

    • 64001: Contact point for the AdminClient or configuration management
    • 64002: Checking in and out of versions
    • 64003: Scheduler for backup jobs
    • 64004: Platform-independent mapping of the functions of an operating system
    • 64023: Required for the operation of Octoplant

Procedure

  1. Execute the Setup.exe file on the computer intended for the installation as administrator.
  2. In the installation wizard that opens, select a language, then select Next.
  3. On the welcome page of the installation wizard, select Next.
  4. Select the Install Octoplant applications option.
  5. Select Next.
  6. On the license agreement page, select I agree to continue with the installation.
  7. Select the Server with existing server archive and select the plus client checkbox, if needed.

The client installation will be executed automatically after the server installation is finished.

  8. Select Next.

  9. In the next step, you will be asked to create a backup of your server archive or to confirm that you have already created a backup of the server archive.

Data backup is required as a database migration is carried out during which the server archive may be damaged and data may be lost.

  10. Enter the paths to the directory of the Octoplant client and server applications. You can enter paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.

We recommend that you keep the paths and directories suggested in the installation wizard.

    Examples:

    • C:\Program Files\vdogClient
    • C:\Program Files\vdogServer
  11. Select Next.

  12. Specify where the existing server archive is stored:

    • Local: The server archive is stored in a local directory.
    • Remote: The server archive is stored in a remote directory.
  13. Select Next.

  14. Enter the paths to the existing server archive, the directory for the client setup files and the client archive.

You can enter paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.

We recommend keeping the paths suggested in the installation wizard.

    Examples:

    • D:\vdServerArchive
    • D:\vdServerArchive\vdog client setup
    • D:\vdClientArchive

If the server archive is stored in a remote directory, the user or the user account from which the installation is carried out requires read and write access to the remote system. If no Octoplant server archive exists at the specified address, an error message appears. The setup cannot be continued until all entries are correct. An existing client archive can also be integrated if required.

  15. Select Next.

  16. TCP port 64023 is required for Octoplant.

If you are updating from a versiondog version older than 9.5, a note will be displayed stating that this port must be enabled. Confirm the note by entering the required text.

  17. Windows XP Professional SP3, Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2003 are no longer supported by Octoplant. A note is displayed in the setup. This contains a link to a detailed list of the options available to you, if you are using older systems. Read the text carefully and type "I understand" in the input field.

  18. If you want to make the Octoplant client setup files available on the network, activate the Create the above network share option. The name of the network share is vdogClient setup. By default, every user has read access to the directory and administrators have full access. The network share is deactivated.

  19. Select Next.

  20. Specify the user account from which the Octoplant services are to be started. You have the choice between the options Local system account and Username.

The account must have full access rights to the server archive directory. We recommend that you select the Username option and specify an account with administrative rights. The system account may not have the necessary rights. The domain must always be specified for a domain account. Format: {Domain}\{Username} (example: DATAMAN\TomT).

  21. Select Next.

  22. On the next page, enter the password for the versiondog superuser.

Critical error when using the password change-it

If the password change-it is set for the user versiondog when the server starts, a critical error is logged in the Octoplant Event log. You must change the password at the next login.

  23. Check the displayed data summary.

  24. If everything is correct, select Next.

The setup is executed. The completion of the installation process is indicated by a message.

  25. After successful installation, select Finish to close the wizard.

If the server is to be installed with clients, the client installation will start automatically as soon as the server installation is complete.
