Installing a new server with client

When installing a new octoplant server with client, the client applications are set up in addition to the octoplant server applications. octoplant server and client applications run on the same computer with this type of installation.

Prerequisites

  • The octoplant setup file is accessible.
  • You have a valid license file.
  • The user performing the installation or the user account through which the installation is performed has administrative rights.
  • Execution of files must be permitted on the drive that is intended as the storage location for the server archive. The same applies to the drive that is intended as the storage location for the client archive. Any existing security policies that prevent the execution of files must be deactivated.
  • If the execution of files is not permitted, an error message (SQLException) is displayed later when logging into the system. A login is not possible.

  • It is recommended not to install the octoplant hub on a computer on which a octoplant server is already installed. If this has already been done, the postgres service octoplant hub PostgreSQL 14 must be stopped manually when installing/updating the octoplant server.

Procedure

  1. Execute the Setup.exe file on the computer intended for the installation as administrator.
  2. The installation wizard will then open.
  3. Select a language. English and German are currently available.
  4. On the welcome page of the installation wizard, select Next.
  5. Select the Install octoplant applications option and then select Next.
  6. On the license agreement page, select I agree to continue with the installation.
  7. Select the Install server applications option and then select Next.
  8. Select the New server with client (both on this computer) option and then select Next.
  9. Enter the path to the octoplant license file and select Next. You can enter the path directly or select it using the Browse... button.

  10. Select the desired program extensions.

    • BackupClient

The BackupClient cannot be installed on the computer on which the octoplant server is running.

    • LibraryManagement

LibraryManagement is an application for version management of standard blocks and is currently available for Siemens S7, Siemens TIA Portal and RSLogix 5000.

LibraryManagement can be installed at a later date at any time.

    • Register file extension for SmartImport for supplier projects

This option allows you to send octoplant projects by email to suppliers and customers who do not use {product_name}} or do not have access to your octoplant server.

If the option is activated, an entry is written in the Windows registry that allows a octoplant delivery bill for suppliers (file type *.vdog-sdn) to be opened in the file manager. If the option is not activated, no registry entry is written and file types *.vdog-sdn can only be opened using the UserClient.

The registration of the file extension can also be made or undone in the UserClient. This is located in the Client settings dialog in the Extensions tab.

    • Register protocol extension to start octoplant via web link

If you have activated this option, you can start the UserClient using a web link in the browser. The web link has the format vdog:cid/{CID}, whereas {CID} is the component ID of the system.

You can also register or deregister the protocol extension in the UserClient. This is located in the Client settings dialog in the Extensions tab.

  11. Select Next.

  12. Enter the paths to the directories for the client and server applications. You can enter paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.

We recommend keeping the paths suggested in the installation wizard.

    Examples:

    • C:\Program Files\vdogClient
    • C:\Program Files\vdogServer
  13. Select Next.

  14. Select the storage location for the server archive.

    • Local: The server archive is stored in a local directory.
    • Remote: The server archive is stored in a remote directory.
  15. Select Next.

  16. Enter the paths to the server archive, the directory for the client setup files and the client archive.
You can enter paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.

We recommend keeping the paths suggested in the installation wizard.

    Examples:

    • D:\vdServerArchive
    • D:\vdServerArchive\vdog client setup
    • D:\vdClientArchive

If you have selected the Remote option as the storage location for the server archive, the Path to the project files on an external drive file is displayed. Enter the path to the remote directory in this field (format: \\systemname\share\path).

For technical reasons, a path for the local server archive must also be entered if the Remote option is selected. The user or user account from which the installation is carried out requires read and write permissions to the remote system.

The server archive contains a range of data: versions, backups, metadata etc. Allow sufficient storage space for the server archive.

  17. Select Next.

  18. If necessary, give the other users of the computer access rights to the client archive. By default, the Grant rights to "All Users" option is activated.
  19. Select Next.
  20. If you want to make the octoplant client setup files available on the network, activate the Create the above network share option. The name of the network share is vdogClient setup. By default, every user has read access to the directory and administrators have full access. The network share is deactivated.

  21. Select Next.

  22. Specify the user account from which the octoplant services are to be started. You have the choice between the Local system account and Username options.

The account must have full access rights to the server archive directory. We recommend selecting the Username option and specifying an account with administrative rights. The system account may not have the necessary rights.
The domain must always be specified for a domain account. Format: {Domain}\{Username} (example: DATAMAN\TomT).

  23. Select Next.

  24. On the next page, enter the password for the versiondog superuser.

    Warning

Don't use the password change-it. If the password change-it is set for the user versiondog when the server is started, a critical error is written to the Event log of octoplant. You must then change the password at the next login.

  25. Specify the options to start the program. You can select several options:

    • Add entry to menu "All Programs"
    • Create shortcuts on desktop
    • Create shortcuts on Quick Launch Bar
  26. Select Next.

  27. Specify, if you want to install octoplant examples. The example are only for illustration purposes, the octoplant system is also fully functional without them.
  28. Select Next.
  29. A summary of your entries is displayed.
  30. Check the displayed data. If everything is correct, select Next.
  31. The setup is executed. The completion of the installation process is indicated by a message.
  32. If the Windows Firewall Service has not been started on the system on which you want to install octoplant, a note is displayed. To continue the installation process, select Continue.
  33. After successful installation, select Finish to close the wizard.
