SMTP server settings

Enter the SMTP server data according to the specifications of your in-house network topology in the section SMTP server settings.

Select your preferred encryption method in the Connection security dropdown menu. You can choose between STARTTLS and TLS (up to v1.2).

Info

TLS encryption is possible from Windows server 2003 onwards. Older Windows versions work with octoplant , but without TLS encryption.

For Authentication method, select either Plain (=none), Login (clear text), CRAM-MD5 or Digest-MD5 as required. After entering all relevant data, you can use the button Send test email to receive an email from the octoplant server to test the connection.

Email settings

Enter the email address and name that will be displayed as the sender in emails sent from the octoplant server.

Info

We recommend entering a sender for the emails here, as in many companies emails without a sender are moved to the spam folder. However, sending emails also works without a sender.

If you do not want all recipients of an email to be able to see who it was sent to, activate the checkbox Send emails using the BCC field. The Recipient field remains empty in this case. This may lead to problems with the email server.

If you activate the Activate email logging checkbox, a detailed log of the email traffic is created, which you can open directly using the Show email log button. The log is sent as a CSV file in the email attachment. You can define the separator between the words in the Server section.

Email options for warnings and errors

If you activate the checkbox, the Who to notify input field is displayed. The members of the Administrators group are already preselected.

If you click in the Who to notify field, the Select email recipients dialog opens. Here you can select additional users and groups who should receive warnings and error messages by email.

Explanation

The sending of emails by the octoplant server may fail if the ESMTP Inspection of your firewall is activated. ESMTP Inspection checks the commands before they are sent to the mail server. If the commands are invalid, they are replaced by invalid placeholders. The mail server rejects these commands and sends the error message Unrecognized command.

Solution

Add the octoplant server as an exception to the ESMTP Inspection of your firewall. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer of your firewall.
