User management module

This chapter deals with the most important aspects of User management with the focus on group-oriented rights management.

Assigning rights to groups

Info

It is recommended to manage user rights via groups instead of setting them individually for each user.

To do this, you must first create groups. The advantage of this uniform assignment of rights is that the rights of individual users are derived from the rights of the group. If you assign the rights directly to individual users, you will need to reckon with additional time.

  • First step: create groups with basic rights and then groups with higher rights. The rights usually depend on the distribution of tasks in your company. It is advisable to name the groups according to their tasks and use them as a basis for assigning rights.
  • If a user needs special rights, a group with these rights should be created. If another user needs the same rights in the future, they can simply be moved to the corresponding group.
  • If a user needs to have certain rights withdrawn, they can simply be removed from the group. However, if rights are assigned to individual users, it is difficult to ensure that a user does not have unwanted rights.

FAQ

Is it possible to delete any user? Are versions checked in by this user also deleted?

If an administrator deletes a user, it does not matter whether the user has checked in a version. The user is deleted and all versions that they have checked in remain unchanged on the server. The documentation of the versions also remains unaffected, the user name (as well as the timestamp and the computer name) also remains in the change history after the user has been deleted.

Info

Users who are currently logged into octoplant can also be deleted. If a user who has been deleted attempts to check a component in or out, an error message is displayed. The user cannot login again.
