BackupClient

Data backups for automation devices that cannot otherwise be accessed by the octoplant system are made via the BackupClient. BackupClient is used wherever there is no connection between the production level networks and the octoplant server, for example for security reasons to prevent unauthorized access to the production equipment.

Figure: Workflow BackupClient

The workflow with the BackupClient is as follows:

  1. The data to be backed up is taken directly from the automation device.
  2. The BackupClient is installed on a transportable computer, for example a laptop, and synchronized with the server in order to receive the jobs required to perform the data backup.
  3. The employee responsible for the data backup takes the computer with the BackupClient to the production facilities, connects the computer to the automation device and executes the jobs for the data backup.
  4. After performing the data backup, the employee returns to his original workstation, connects to the server and transfers the data to it.

The BackupClient is installed or uninstalled via the octoplant setup. The following requirements apply to the computer on which the BackupClient is installed:

  • It must be a 64-bit system.
  • No octoplant server must be installed on the computer.

Info

If the BackupClient is installed, administrator rights are required to execute a SmartUpdate (and to run the BackupClient in general).
