Working with Multi-user editing

The Multi-user editing function allows project files to be managed and edited by several users in a central working directory outside the local client archive.

During Check-in, the last changes made are copied to the server as usual.

With a usual Check-out, the data in the client archive is overwritten by the data on the server. This means that if several users are working with the project data in a directory, for example in a remote archive, and one of the users performs a Check-Out, the local changes made by all users to this directory are deleted.

If Multi-user editing is activated for a component, the Check-Out function is disabled so that the changes made by other users are not overwritten. The Copy version to a directory function can be used instead to overwrite the project in the working directory. If the component is deleted locally, the working directory is not deleted, only the component directory in the client archive.

Prerequisites

  • an editor that supports multiple users working on the same project at the same time (e.g. Siemens PCS7)
  • a shared folder like a network share
  • a component with Multi-user editing enabled. This can be a component of any component type.
  • the function Automatic version creation after job execution in the AdminClient must be deactivated. As it is not possible to perform a Check-Out, the automatically created versions would only consume more memory for this component.

Creating a component with Multi-User editing

  1. Create a new component.
  2. The Create new component dialog opens.

  3. Select the desired component type in the Component type area.

  4. Specify the component directory and the working directory in the Component path area. The working directory must be outside the local computer.
  5. Activate the Multi-user editing checkbox in the Component settings area. If the working directory is located on the local computer, it is grayed out and cannot be activated.
  6. Select the Create component button.

Components for which Multi-user editing is activated are marked in the Project tree with the UC Multi-user editing.PNG icon.
