Setting up agents

After configuring the image setting in octoplant, the agent is set up. If an operating system that is supported by octoplant (Windows 10, for example) is installed on the target system from which the data is to be backed up, the agent is installed directly on the target system. If an operating system is installed on the target system from which the data is to be backed up that is not supported by (Windows NT, for example), the agent cannot be installed directly on the target system. The agent must be installed on a separate computer. This agent computer is connected between the server and the target system.

Agents are installed through a separate setup. The setup file for agents is included as standard in every octoplant software package. The name of the is AgentSetup.exe file.

When the server system is installed, a network share is created in which all setup files relevant for the client are located. The AgentSetup.exe file can be found in the directory ..\vdServerArchive\vdog agent setup.

Prerequisites for the installation

  • Agent licensing has taken place.
  • The agent setup file is accessible. If you cannot find the file or do not have access to the file, contact your system administrator.
  • The user or the user account from which the installation is carried out has administrator rights. The installation can only be carried out via a user account with administrator rights.

Installing agents

  1. Start the setup on the computer intended for installing the agents, for example by double-clicking on the AgentSetup.exe file.
  2. In the installation wizard that opens, select a language version. English and German are currently available.
  3. On the welcome page of the installation wizard, select Next to start the installation.
  4. Enter a directory for the Agent program files and a directory for the agent Agent archive. The directories can be entered directly or searched for via file selection. It is recommended to keep the paths suggested in the installation wizard:
    • C:\Programs\vdogAgents
    • D:\vdAgentArchive
  5. Select Next.
  6. Specify the user account from which the octoplant services are started. You have the choice between the options Local system account and User name. We recommend selecting the User name name option and specifying an account with administrator rights on the client PC. The installation can only be carried out using a user account with administrator rights. The system account may not have the necessary rights.
  7. Select Next. A summary appears.
  8. Check your entries. If everything is correct, select Next. The setup is executed. The completion of the installation process is indicated by a message.
  9. Click Finish to close the wizard.

After the installation, the agent services (UploadAgent for the upload agent and CompareAgent for the compare agent) are executed under the Windows services. You can find the Windows services under Windows 7, for example via Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.
