Microsoft Word

Info

If you only want to backup Word documents in your component, the Word component type is recommended. When backing up documents that were created with different editors, the Documentation component type is recommended because it integrates also the Binary, ASCII, Excel, PDF and Word comparators.

The comparators of the Word and Documentation component types support the file formats doc, doc?, dot, dot? and rtf. The question mark ? stands for all possible endings of the respective file format.

Requirements

  • To carry out uploads and comparisons, a licensed version of Microsoft Word must be installed on the same computer on which the server or an agent is running.
  • You must launch either the agent or the VDog MasterService (depending on which one is used) as an application.

For detailed instructions, see Starting agents and VDog MasterService as applications

FAQ

Comparison of a Word type component containing password-protected files fails

There are several ways to solve this problem:

Changing the comparator configuration

  1. Start the UserClient.
  2. In the Edit tab of the menu bar, select the Edit component configuration button.
  3. In the Component configuration dialog, select the Comparator configuration button.
  4. In the Exclude lines from comparison area of the Comparison configuration dialog, enter the password.

  5. Select the Exclude all non-displayable characters from entire comparison checkbox.

Performing a binary comparison of the passwords

If the passwords of the two DOCX files you want to compare are different, only a binary comparison can be performed. To do this, you must change the comparison for the component type from Winword to Binary. To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. Start the AdminClient.
  2. Select the Component type editor module.
  3. In the in the Component type library, select the corresponding component type.
  4. In the Compare these files table, select the Winword compare class.
  5. Double-click the comparator and select Binary from the dropdown menu.

Creating a version without comparison

Alternatively, you can create a version without performing a comparison.

  1. Start the UserClient.
  2. In the Extras tab of the menu bar, select the Version without difference button.
