Installing a server with existing server archive and client

When installing a versiondog server with an existing server archive and client, the versiondog server and client applications are installed and an existing server archive is integrated. With this type of installation, existing server archive data can continue to be used. No new server archive needs to be created and no data is lost.

If desired, an existing client archive can also be integrated.

Warning

We recommend that the installation with an existing server archive is carried out with the same versiondog version that was used to create the server archive.

Requirements for the installation

  • The versiondog setup file is accessible.
  • You have a valid license file.
  • The user performing the installation or the user account through which the installation is performed has administrative rights.
  • Execution of files must be permitted on the drive that is intended as the storage location for the server archive. Any existing security policies that prevent the execution of files must be deactivated.
  • If the execution of files is not permitted, an error message (SQLException) is displayed later when logging into the system. A login is not possible.

Procedure

  1. Execute the Setup.exe file on the computer intended for the installation as administrator.
  2. The installation wizard will then open.
  3. Select a language. English and German are currently available.
  4. On the welcome page of the installation wizard, select Next.
  5. Select the option Install versiondog applications and then select Next.

  6. Select the option I agree. and then select Next. If you do not agree to the license agreements, the installation will not continue.

  9. Select the desired program extensions.

The BackupClient cannot be installed on the computer on which the versiondog server is running.

    LibraryManagement

LibraryManagement is an application for version management of standard blocks and is currently available for Siemens S7, Siemens TIA Portal and RSLogix 5000.

LibraryManagement is an add-on and therefore requires a separate license.

If you install LibraryManagement without a license, this will have no negative effects. If you call up LibraryManagement, you will receive a message that this function is not included in your license.

LibraryManagement can be installed at a later date at any time.

Register file extension for SmartImport for supplier projects

This option allows you to send versiondog projects by email to suppliers and customers who do not use versiondog or do not have access to your versiondog server.

If the option is activated, an entry is written in the Windows registry that allows a versiondog delivery bill for suppliers (file type *.vdog-sdn) to be opened in the file manager. If the option is not activated, no registry entry is written and file types *.vdog-sdn can only be opened using the UserClient.

The registration of the file extension can also be made or undone in the UserClient. This is located in the Client settings dialog in the Extensions tab.

Register protocol extension to start versiondog via web link

If you have activated this option, you can start the UserClient using a web link in the browser. The web link has the format vdog:cid/{CID}, whereas {CID} is the component ID of the system.

You can also register or deregister the protocol extension in the UserClient. This is located in the Client settings dialog in the Extensions tab.

  10. In the next step, you will be asked to create a backup of your server archive or to confirm that you have already created a backup of the server archive. Data backup is required as a database migration is carried out during which the server archive may be damaged and data may be lost.

  11. Enter the paths to the directory of the versiondog client applications and server applications.
You can enter the paths directly or select them using the Browse... button.

Figure: Installation wizard, specifying paths to the program directories

We recommend that you keep the paths and directories suggested in the installation wizard.
    Examples:

    • C:\Program Files\vdogClient
    • C:\Program Files\vdogServer
  12. Select Next.

  13. Specify where the existing server archive is stored:
    • Local: The server archive is stored in a local directory.
    • Remote: The server archive is stored in a remote directory.
  14. Select Next.
  15. Enter the path to the existing server archive, a directory for the client setup files and the storage location of the client archive.
You can enter the path and directories directly or select them using the Browse... button.

Figure: Installation wizard, specifying paths for server and client archives

We recommend keeping the paths suggested in the installation wizard.
    Examples:

    • D:\vdServerArchive
    • D:\vdServerArchive\vdog client setup
    • D:\vdClientArchive

If the server archive is stored in a remote directory, the user or user account from which the installation is carried out requires read and write access to the remote system. If no versiondog server archive exists at the specified address, an error message appears. The setup cannot be continued until all entries are correct. An existing client archive can also be integrated if required.

  16. Select Next.

From versiondog version 9.5, a new port is required (TCP port 64023). If you update from an older versiondog version, you will be shown a note stating that this port must be enabled. Confirm the note by entering the required text.

  17. Windows XP Professional SP3, Windows Vista SP2 and Windows Server 2003 are no longer supported from versiondog 9.0 . A note is displayed in the setup. This contains a link to a detailed list of the options available to you, if you are using older systems. Read the text carefully and confirm it, if necessary, by entering "I understand" in the input field.

  18. If necessary, give the other users of the computer access rights to the client archive. By default, the option Grant rights to "All Users" is activated.

  19. If you want to make the versiondog client setup files available on the network, activate the Create the above network share option. The Create the above network share option is disabled by default.
The name of the network share is vdog client setup.

    Info

By default, every user has read access to the directory and administrators have full access.

  20. Select Next.

  21. Specify the user account from which the versiondog services are to be started. You have the choice between the options Local system account and Username.

Figure: Installation wizard, user account specification

The account must have full access rights to the server archive directory. We recommend that you select the Username option and specify an account with administrative rights. The system account may not have the necessary rights. The domain must always be specified for a domain account.
    Format:{domain}\{user name}. Example: DATAMAN\TomT.

  22. Select Next.

  23. The dialog for entering the password for the superuser versiondog opens.

Figure: Installation wizard, entering a password for versiondog

    Info

The password change-it must not be used. If the password change-it is set for the user versiondog when the server is started, a critical error is written to the Event log of versiondog. You must then change the password at the next login.

  24. Specify the options to start the program. You can select several options:

    • Add entry to menu "All Programs"
    • Create shortcuts on desktop
    • Create shortcuts on Quick Launch Bar
  25. Select Next. A summary of your entries appears.
  26. Check the data displayed. If everything is correct, select Next.
  27. The setup is executed. The completion of the installation process is indicated by a message.
If the Windows Firewall Service has not been started on the system on which you want to install versiondog, a note is displayed. To continue the installation process, select Continue.
  28. After successful installation, select Finish to close the wizard.
